Cozumel has four ticketed parks, a barrier reef down its whole west coast and one ferry. If you are off a cruise ship you have roughly six hours ashore, which is exactly how long the island parks authority says Punta Sur alone takes. So the honest answer is pick one thing. The reefs on the west coast are the best one, and they are the only thing here you cannot reach on foot.
We book boats in Cozumel every week, which means we spend a lot of time telling Americans that the thing they circled on the map is forty five minutes long and the thing they skipped is the whole island.

What each thing on the island actually takes
Here is the part no list of things to do in Cozumel includes, and it is published by the island parks authority itself. Every ticketed park on the island tells you how long it takes. Nobody adds the numbers up.
| Place | Time it takes | Online price | At the gate | Water? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Punta Sur | 6 hours | 323 pesos | 475 pesos | Yes |
| Chankanaab | 4 hours | 418 pesos | 589 pesos | Yes |
| Island Museum | 4 hours | 209 pesos | 209 pesos | No |
| San Gervasio ruins | 45 minutes | Sold at the gate | Sold at the gate | No |
Read that first column again. Six hours. Four hours. Four hours. A cruise ship gives you about six and a half, and about forty minutes of that is the queue to get off the boat and the walk down the pier.
Which brings us to the thing that is wrong with every other page about this.
Why every list of things to do in Cozumel is too long
The standard article gives you fifteen. Fifteen things to do, numbered, each with a photograph and a sentence that starts “no trip to Cozumel is complete without”.
Fifteen is not a list. Fifteen is a dare.
Punta Sur and Chankanaab together are ten hours by the operator’s own clock, and that is before the taxi. You physically cannot do both and a reef and a ruin and a tequila tasting and a beach club in one port call. The list is not written for your day. It is written for a word count.
So we are going to do the opposite and tell you what to cut.
The 45-minute ruin that gets treated like a pilgrimage
San Gervasio is the Maya site in the middle of the island. It was a shrine to Ix Chel, women crossed from the mainland by canoe to visit it, and it is genuinely the most important archaeological site on Cozumel.
It is also, according to the people who run it, a forty five minute visit.
Not forty five minutes plus a tour. Forty five minutes. The guide is included in the ticket, there is a snack bar at the visitor centre, and then you are standing in the car park wondering what to do with the rest of the day you blocked out for it.
This is not a knock on San Gervasio. It is a knock on every article that files it under “spend the day”. Go, by all means. Budget an hour and a half with the drive and then go do something else, because the island has not finished with you.
The reefs are the island, and you cannot walk to them
Here is the sentence that should be at the top of every one of those fifteen-item lists, and is usually at number seven between a dolphin pen and a shopping tip.
Cozumel is a reef with an island attached.
The west coast sits on the Mesoamerican Reef, the second largest barrier reef system on the planet. Palancar, Columbia, Santa Rosa Wall, Paradise, Cielito. They are not beaches with good snorkelling off the end. They are offshore formations in open water, and the only way to be above one is to be on a boat that took you there.

You can snorkel from the shore in Cozumel and people do. Dzul Ha, Money Bar, the rocks in front of half the hotels on the south road. It is pleasant. It is also to Palancar roughly what a municipal pool is to the ocean.
If you have one slot in your day, this is the slot. A Cozumel snorkelling trip runs three or four hours, hits two or three reefs, and is the only item on the island that you cannot get a version of anywhere else in Mexico.
One thing to budget for that the tour price sometimes hides: the national marine park charges a daily fee per person. It went up on the first of January 2026 to 218.32 pesos, roughly double the 108 pesos it had been since 2020. That figure comes from dive-industry reporting rather than a government bulletin we could open, so treat it as the right order of magnitude and ask your operator whether it is inside the price or collected at the dock.
El Cielo is a sandbar, not a reef, and that matters
El Cielo turns up on every list described as a snorkelling site. It is not, quite, and the difference decides whether you are going to enjoy it.
El Cielo is a shallow sand flat at the southern end of the island where the water is waist deep, the bottom is white, and there are starfish on it. That is the whole attraction and it is a lovely one. What it is not is a wall of coral with a thousand fish on it.
Which is why nearly every boat sells it bundled: Palancar for the reef, El Cielo for the photograph, Cielito in between. If somebody offers you El Cielo on its own and you came for fish, you have bought the wrong half.
Also, and we say this with love for the starfish: do not pick them up. They are alive, the guides will ask you not to, and a sea star held out of the water for a photograph is having a worse day than you are.
The east coast, where almost nobody goes
Cozumel has two coasts and the tourism industry has only ever used one of them.
The west side faces the mainland, holds the reef, the town, the three cruise terminals and every hotel. The east side faces open ocean. There is one road, a handful of beach bars that take cash, and then nothing for miles.

Rent a scooter or a jeep, drive the loop, stop at Punta Morena or Chen Rio for fish and a beer, and you will see more of Cozumel in three hours than the entire cruise pier manages in a season.
Bring the camera rather than the snorkel. There is no reef in front of this side, so the view is the point. All the underwater work happens on the west.
This is the single most under-rated afternoon on the island, and it is under-rated for an extremely boring reason: no commission. Nobody on the pier earns anything by telling you to drive away from it.
If you are staying on the island rather than visiting it
Everything above assumes you are on a clock. If you have three or four days, the island rearranges itself and gets much better.
- Day one, the reef. Palancar and Columbia, early, before the afternoon boats. Mornings are flatter and the light is better.
- Day two, the east coast. Jeep, the loop road, lunch at a beach bar, Punta Sur on the way back if you still have four hours in you.
- Day three, the town. San Miguel after the ships have left, which is any evening after about six. The main square is a different place without them.
- Day four, the water again. Everyone does. Nobody has ever gone home from Cozumel wishing they had spent less time on a boat.
If you are building a trip around the water rather than fitting water into a trip, a private boat in Cozumel stops being a tour and starts being transport. You pick the reefs, you pick the hour, and you are not sharing a swim platform with a catamaran full of people who booked on the pier.
Coming over from Playa del Carmen for the day
Plenty of people visit Cozumel without ever being on a cruise, and the crossing is the easiest piece of logistics in the Riviera Maya.
Three operators run the passenger ferry from Playa del Carmen: Ultramar, Winjet and Xcaret Xailing. The crossing is thirty five to forty five minutes and a one-way ticket runs around 280 pesos, call it sixteen dollars. The route is busy enough that it set a passenger record in July 2026.
The number that actually matters is the last boat back. As of October 2026 that is 8:00pm on Ultramar and 8:30pm on Xcaret Xailing. Build your day backwards from it, because the island is lovely and the alternative to catching it is a hotel you did not budget for.
Passenger ferries do not take cars. There is a separate car ferry, Transcaribe, at roughly 880 pesos, and almost nobody reading this needs it. Rent on the island instead.
What we see when people book Cozumel
We are a broker. We do not own boats, we book other people’s, which means we see what gets asked for across a lot of operators at once. Four patterns repeat.
The cruise crowd books too late and too much. The request comes in with four stops on it and a 2pm all-aboard. We cut it to two reefs and a sandbar roughly nine times out of ten, and nobody has ever complained that the day felt thin.
Morning is not a preference, it is the product. The water on the west side is flattest early and the boat traffic over Palancar builds through the day. An 8am departure and an 11am departure to the same reef are different experiences at the same price.
People book El Cielo expecting a reef. See above. We now ask outright whether they want fish or the photograph, because the answer changes which boat we put them on.
Nearly everyone under-books the time. A three-hour charter in Cozumel is two reefs with the travel included. Four hours is two reefs you are not rushed at. The extra hour is the cheapest upgrade on the island and it is the one people skip.
For what any of this costs across the country, we broke the whole thing down in how much it costs to rent a yacht in Mexico, and the Cozumel numbers in there are the ones we quote.
One number that explains the whole island
Cozumel took 2,999,047 cruise passengers in the first seven months of 2026, up a little over ten percent on the same stretch of 2025. Apiqroo, the state port administrator expects the year to land somewhere near 4.76 million, and some local reporting puts the target at five.
The resident population at the 2020 national census was 88,626.
That is around fifty visitors per resident per year, arriving through three terminals onto one island with one ring road. It explains the queue at Chankanaab, it explains why the east coast is empty, and it explains why the single best decision you can make in Cozumel is to get on the water and let the pier have the afternoon.
Common questions
What is the number one thing to do in Cozumel?
Snorkel or dive the west coast reef. Palancar, Columbia and Santa Rosa Wall are part of the Mesoamerican Reef and none of them is reachable from shore, so it needs a boat. It is also the one thing on the island you cannot do anywhere else in Mexico.
Is one day enough for Cozumel?
For one thing, yes. The island parks authority puts Punta Sur at six hours and Chankanaab at four, so a cruise day with roughly six hours ashore fits a reef trip or one park, not both. Three days is where Cozumel starts to open up.
How long do you need at San Gervasio?
Forty five minutes, according to the island parks authority that runs it. Allow about an hour and a half including the drive from town. The guide is included in the ticket.
Is Chankanaab or Punta Sur better?
Punta Sur is bigger, wilder and takes six hours, with a lighthouse, a lagoon and a beach at the far end. Chankanaab is four hours, closer to the cruise terminals and built for easy swimming and snorkelling. If you are off a ship and want water without a long drive, Chankanaab. If you have the whole day, Punta Sur.
How much is the ferry from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel?
Around 280 pesos one way, roughly sixteen dollars, on Ultramar, Winjet or Xcaret Xailing. The crossing takes thirty five to forty five minutes. As of October 2026 the last boat back from Cozumel is 8:00pm on Ultramar and 8:30pm on Xcaret Xailing.
Do you need a car in Cozumel?
Only for the east coast, and then a scooter or a jeep rented on the island does the job. The passenger ferries do not carry cars. Taxis cover the town, the cruise terminals and the south road perfectly well.
Is there a fee to snorkel in Cozumel?
Yes. The national marine park charges a daily fee per person, reported at 218.32 pesos since the first of January 2026, up from 108 pesos. Ask your operator whether it is included in the trip price or collected at the dock.
Tell us what you want to see and we will tell you if it fits the day
Send us your date, how long you have and what you actually care about – reef, sandbar, fishing, or just a quiet deck away from the pier – and we will come back with the boats that fit it and the ones that do not.
We book across the operators here rather than owning one, so we have no reason to sell you the four-stop day that does not work. Snorkelling trips, catamaran days and fishing charters all run from the same marinas, and how it works explains the booking in about a minute.
Heading up the coast afterwards? The best time to visit Cancun and Cancun versus Tulum cover the rest of the Riviera Maya, and the sargassum guide is the one to read before you pick a beach anywhere on this coast.
Tell us your dates and we will do the arithmetic for you.
