Cabo has been running bachelor parties since Van Halen opened a cantina here in 1990. The town knows exactly what you are doing and has priced accordingly. Here is what it actually costs, and the two local rules that decide how your trip goes.
The short answer
A bachelor party in Cabo San Lucas wants three or four nights based downtown or on Medano Beach, so nobody needs a taxi at 2am. One boat day, either fishing or a private charter under the Arch. Bars are walkable. Budget about 120 to 180 USD a head for the boat and 20 to 45 for a big night, plus the fees below.
We book charters out of this marina, so the numbers here are the ones on the operators’ own rate cards rather than a guess at what things cost.
If Cancun is also being argued about in the group chat, the Cancun version of this guide covers the boats and resorts that turn away all-male groups.
What a Cabo bachelor party actually costs
| What | Published price | The bit that surprises people |
|---|---|---|
| Sportfishing charter, 33ft, up to 10 | From about 120 USD an hour | Everyone on board needs a fishing licence, whether they fish or not |
| Private yacht, 42 to 45ft, 10 to 12 guests | About 239 to 275 USD an hour | Four-hour minimum on most boats. Extra hours are the cheap part. |
| Private catamaran, 3 hours, 11 to 20 guests | 1,500 USD for the whole boat | Unlimited open bar and crew included, 5 USD per person marina fee is not |
| Fishing licence | About 20 to 28 USD per person per day | Required for every passenger, at any age, fishing or not |
| Crew tip, marina fees and tax | Roughly 10 to 15 percent on the charter | Cash, to the captain, who splits it |
| El Squid Roe | About 20 USD cover | Three floors, five bars. Some nights there is no cover at all. |
| Mandala | Pre-sale from about 45 USD | Rises for holidays and name DJs. Dress code enforcement is inconsistent. |
| Baja California Sur tourist tax | 488 pesos, about 28 USD each | Every visitor over 12 staying more than 24 hours |
| Airport taxi, SJD to Cabo San Lucas | 75 to 95 USD | A 14-seat van into town is about 2 USD a head. Worth asking. |
The two rules that decide your trip
Drinking on the beach is illegal. Alcohol in public places, the sand included, is against the law in Los Cabos, and open container rules are enforced on Medano and Lover’s Beach. Bars, beach clubs and the resort’s own beach section are licensed and fine. A cooler on the public sand is the one plan in every bachelor party guide online that can end with a fine.
The port closes without notice. When surf or wind gets up, the Capitania de Puerto shuts the harbour to every vessel under 500 gross tons. Fishing charters, water taxis, dive boats and sunset cruises all stop, and there is no public tracker that warns tourists in advance. Most operators respond with a credit toward a reschedule rather than a refund, which is only useful if you have a spare day. Put the boat on day one or two.

The boat day: fishing or charter
This is the decision that shapes the trip, and it is worth making deliberately rather than at the dock.
Fishing is what Cabo is actually famous for. The drop-off sits close to shore, so you are in blue water in under an hour instead of burning half the charter getting there. Published rates start around 120 USD an hour for a 33-foot sportfisher taking up to ten. The Los Cabos fleet has been doing this since the 1980s and knows where the fish are, which is most of what you are paying for.
Two Mexican rules to know before anyone books. Every person on board needs a fishing licence, regardless of age and regardless of whether they intend to fish, at roughly 20 to 28 USD per person per day. And Cabo charter crews are no longer permitted to fillet your catch for you, so if the plan involves dinner, arrange a restaurant that will cook it.
A private charter is the other shape: the Arch, Lover’s Beach and Pelican Rock, a sound system, and a boat that goes where you tell it. Published Cabo rates run about 239 to 275 USD an hour for a 42 to 45 foot yacht taking ten to twelve, or 1,500 USD for a three-hour catamaran cruise for eleven to twenty with unlimited open bar included. One Cabo listing prices it especially clearly at 920 USD for the first four hours up to four guests, 90 USD per extra guest and 180 per extra hour.
Note the pattern in that last line, because it holds across Mexico: the boat is the expensive part and the hours are not. Groups routinely cut an hour to save money and cut the best hour of the day to save the least. The full range of Cabo boat days sits on one page if you want to compare properly.
If you take a water taxi instead, the fair price to the Arch is about 20 USD a head. Vendors on Medano open at 40, 50, sometimes 60. Agree the fare and the pickup time before you step on, photograph the boat, and do not pay in full until you are collected.
The beach that is not a beach
Lover’s Beach and Divorce Beach are the same strip of sand, a hundred metres apart, and only one of them is swimmable.
The Sea of Cortez side is calm and shallow. The Pacific side has steep drop-offs metres from the sand, cold sweeping currents and waves that break directly onto the beach with no reef or bay to absorb them. There are no lifeguards. The Mexican Navy has pulled Americans out of the surf there, and the currents have killed people over the years.
Nobody puts a fence between the two. You walk over a small rise and the ocean changes personality. It is worth saying out loud on the boat, once, to a group that has been drinking, because everyone assumes a beach is a beach.
The nightlife, and what it costs
Downtown Cabo San Lucas is compact enough to do the whole night on foot, which is the main argument for staying there.
| Venue | Hours | Cover | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cabo Wabo Cantina | 9am to 2am daily | Usually none | House band Thursday through Sunday |
| El Squid Roe | Through the day until 4am | About 20 USD | Club format from 8pm. Some nights no cover. |
| Mandala | 8pm to 5am | Pre-sale from about 45 USD | Dress code enforcement is inconsistent. Wear the shirt. |
| OMNIA day club | Daytime | Varies by artist | It is in San Jose del Cabo, 35 to 50 USD each way |
Cabo Wabo is the landmark and it has a better story than its reputation suggests. It opened on 22 April 1990 with Van Halen headlining the party, founded by Sammy Hagar with Eddie and Alex Van Halen, Michael Anthony and a local partner. It then lost money badly enough that Hagar bought his bandmates out. The house band plays Thursday through Sunday, doors run 9am to 2am, and there is normally no cover unless somebody notable is on.
El Squid Roe is the big one: three floors, five bars, a kitchen and an MC running the room, open through the day and turning into a nightclub around 8pm. Cover is about 20 USD and some nights there is none. Nobody is going to stop you at the door over a pair of shorts.
Mandala runs 8pm to 5am with pre-sale tickets from around 45 USD, more for holidays and headline DJs. Its dress code is genuinely contested between sources, one saying it is not enforced and another listing a full no-shorts, no-tanks, no-flip-flops policy. Wear the collared shirt. It costs you nothing and it settles the argument.
One correction worth making. Every bachelor party list names OMNIA alongside those three. OMNIA is not in Cabo San Lucas. It is at Vidanta in San Jose del Cabo, at the far end of the Corridor, which is a 35 to 50 USD taxi each way and a very different end to the night than walking home.
Medano Beach, and the Mango Deck problem
Medano is the swimmable beach and the daytime social centre, and it comes with two things worth budgeting for.
The vendors. Reviewers describe being approached every thirty seconds to two minutes, saying no gracias fifty or sixty times in an afternoon, and in one case well over a hundred. It is not aggressive, it is just relentless. A beach club lounger buys you a boundary.
The billing. Mango Deck, the best-known bar on the sand, has a long and specific complaint record on TripAdvisor: bills charged in the wrong currency, change returned at a made-up exchange rate, service and tax stacked at 20 percent each, waiters requesting cash and splitting card transactions. Multiple reviewers over multiple years. It also runs a minimum spend of around 20 USD per chair and will move you if you are not hitting it.
None of that means avoid the place. It means do what you would do at home with a bar tab you cannot read: check the currency on the bill, check whether service is already on it, and pay attention to the number before you sign it. Outpost Cabo reportedly adds an automatic 20 percent tip that is not mentioned upfront, so the habit is worth having everywhere.

Getting there, and the Uber rule
SJD is about 27 miles from Cabo San Lucas, 30 to 45 minutes by private transfer. Taxi 75 to 95 USD, shared shuttle 18 to 40 USD a head. For a group of twelve, ask about a 14-seat van, which comes out around 2 USD a head into town.
An Uber can drop you at departures but cannot collect you at arrivals. Mexican airports are federal zones requiring plates rideshare drivers do not hold, the Supreme Court upheld the ban in 2026, and drivers caught picking up face 2,500 USD fines and confiscation. So book the transfer in, and use whatever you like on the way out.
The corridor after customs, lined with badges and clipboards and free offers, is not the exit. It is the timeshare floor. Walk through it, outside, to the numbered umbrellas where the actual drivers wait.
And a small one that ruins morning departures: Baja California Sur stopped observing daylight saving in 2022. Cabo is on Mountain Standard Time all year, so the gap between your city and Cabo shifts twice a year. Check the real time difference the week you fly, not the one you remember from last time.
When to go
November through April is dry and reliable. March is spring break, the busiest and most expensive month of the year. May is the sweet spot on value. September and October are the cheapest and the riskiest, with hurricane season running June to November and peaking August to October.
Two calendar notes. Whale season runs mid-December to mid-April, best January to March, and is included on most catamaran cruises in those months. And Bisbee‘s Black and Blue marlin tournament takes over the town in late October, with purses regularly past seven million dollars. If your group fishes, that is either the best week of the year to be here or the worst one to try booking a boat.
What we see when people book
Four, every season, all avoidable.
The boat goes on the last morning. Then the port closes or the flight is early. Book it for day one or two and keep a spare day behind it.
Nobody counts the fishing licences. Twelve men on a sportfisher is twelve licences at 20 to 28 USD each, whether ten of them fish or two do. It is a small number that lands as a surprise at the dock.
The group books four hours and wants six. Extra hours are the cheapest line on the rate card, and the hour groups cut is almost always the one they would have talked about afterwards.
Everyone brings cards and no cash. Marina fees, licences, tips, water taxis and most small places want pesos. Use an ATM attached to an actual bank, take pesos, and decline the screen that offers to do the conversion for you.
Common questions
Can you drink on the beach in Cabo?
No. Public drinking, including on the sand, is illegal in Los Cabos and enforced on Medano and Lover’s Beach. Beach clubs, bars and your resort’s licensed beach section are fine.
How much is a fishing charter in Cabo for a group?
Published rates start around 120 USD an hour for a 33-foot boat taking up to ten people. Add a fishing licence at about 20 to 28 USD for every person on board, plus roughly 10 to 15 percent for marina fees, tax and the crew tip.
Is Cabo better than Cancun for a bachelor party?
For a group that wants to walk everywhere and fish, yes. Cabo’s nightlife is concentrated in a few downtown blocks and the fishing is world class. Cancun has more clubs and a longer boat season, and some of its shared party boats will not take all-male groups.
How many nights should we book?
Three or four. Arrival, boat day, one big night and a slow day. Any longer and the group starts splitting into people who want different holidays, which is fine but should be planned rather than discovered.
Do we need a licence to fish?
Yes, and so does everyone else on the boat. Mexican rules require a fishing licence for every passenger, regardless of age or whether they plan to fish.
What happens if the weather closes the port?
Nothing sails. Operators generally issue a credit toward a rescheduled trip rather than a cash refund, so the trip only recovers if you left yourself another day.
Sort the boat, then sort the rest

We will also tell you which day to book it on, because in Cabo the harbour has an opinion.
